A theatrical home for Twin Cities women.

Our mission is to deliver thought-provoking live theatre conceived and created by women, providing audiences with engaging, rarely-seen perspectives on issues that are relevant and universal.

Theatre Unbound (TU) has become an important cultural institution in the Twin Cities for both emerging and seasoned artists. In a world where women are still underrepresented in the industry, especially as playwrights, directors, and designers; we focus on creating a safe space for women to learn and thrive in all aspects of theatre-making.

Saying Goodbye to Theatre Unbound

Statement from the Board

More than twenty years ago, a group of women theater artists decided to create for themselves the opportunities they couldn’t find in the Twin Cities, and Theatre Unbound was born. Our mission -- to deliver thought-provoking live theatre conceived and created by women, providing audiences with engaging, rarely-seen perspectives on issues that are relevant and universal -- is one that has led us through more than fifty productions with hundreds of women artists. We are grateful for the momentum built by our founders and the many artists, company members, volunteers, and board members who have continued and built on our work. Unfortunately, the board has made the difficult decision to dissolve Theatre Unbound.

This year presented many opportunities for reflection, and the board believes that we are not in a position to further our mission. Borrowing words of wisdom from our colleagues at Patrick’s Cabaret, we are courageously deciding that survival is not the goal, and our volunteer-run organization is no longer sustainable. While we make space to grieve our ending, we also know that endings can be cause for celebration, and we look forward to celebrating the legacy and impact of Theatre Unbound with our community this summer. Stay tuned for more to come.

We are proud of the mark Theatre Unbound has made in the Twin Cities, and we are thrilled to see new theaters forming to support women, bring underrepresented voices to the stage, and continue the momentum. Some of the theaters we’ll be keeping an eye on include Prime Productions, Rough Magic, New Dawn, Theatre Elision, Grumble Theatre, and Theatre Pro Rata. We believe that the work Theatre Unbound did to create opportunities for women artists helped make space for theaters like these, and we hope you will join us in supporting them.

As always, we are grateful to Springboard for the Arts and the Minneapolis Regional Arts Council for the support they provide to artists and to companies like us.  We also feel honored by the donors who have supported our work over the lifetime of this organization. It was because of your support that we have been able to provide paid opportunities to women artists, both on and off the stage.

Thank you to all current and past company members for driving Theatre Unbound’s creative vision and bringing all our productions to life. And our most special thank you goes to our founders Anne Bertram, Jeannine Coulombe, Laurel Osterkamp, Stacey Poirier, Amy Rydberg Reise, Sharon Koval Stiteler, and Heather Stone.

We understand this news is difficult. Our community of artists, audience members, donors, and supporters are precious to us. If you have questions, memories, or feelings you’d like to share, we encourage you to reach out to us at info@theatreunbound.com

With gratitude,
